Anonymous asked: i dont matter in the universe. whats even the point in living?
Don’t matter in the universe? Don’t matter? Anon, look at your hands! Hold them out in front of you, turn them over, see how they extend to your arms, which extend to your shoulders, which extend to your head and torso and the rest of your body? Riddle me this: how can you not matter when you are matter?
I know, I know, you’re probably rolling your eyes at me now, thinking, ohhh, I don’t know — Doctor, I’m talking figuratively, or, I meant it in a philosophical sense, you old dolt.
But the thing is, the fact that you are a solid, living being is fifty percent of the reason that it’s important you’re alive right now. The other fifty percent is the fact that you do talk figuratively, or mean things in a philosophical sense.
What I mean to say is, what you do affects the universe around you — the fact that you are matter allows you to change the rest of the universe in precise and specific ways — but what you think, what you feel, what you decide and what you believe — that’s what affects what you do.
Look at your hands again now. Think of the fact that you used those hands to type this- very!- message to me. Think of the feelings and emotions that made you turn your hands over and over until your fingers hit those keys. Then think about, maybe, what would have happened if you decided to not send me these words at all. I wouldn’t be writing this, would I? And you wouldn’t be reading it now — along with others, who may need to hear these words I’m saying, too. Your emotions led to you making a decision that has henceforth made an impact in at least two peoples’ lives — yours and my own — and has the potential to make an impact in many, many more.
That’s the point of living. That’s what makes it worth it. The potential to affect peoples’ lives irreversibly. You do it everyday, without even realising it. You talk to people, you type to people, you text them or you write them notes. And maybe sometimes you don’t — which has just as much an impact on this universe as if you had.
The thing is, Anonymous, life is complicated and hard and nigh on impossible sometimes because people are complicated and hard and- improbable! You never know what people are going to do, or where they’re going, and that can be scary — because the unknown is a terrifying concept. Good things have just as much potential to happen as bad things do, and when you’ve had a lot of bad in your life, it’s hard to believe that good is anywhere around the corner. But it is — it can be. It always can be, even if you feel it won’t ever be.
With death, though, there’s no more can bes. Potential is only there so long as you are alive to touch the fabric of the universe with your fingertips — with the soles of your feet and the tips of your toes and the smile behind the sadness in your eyes. Death is an end — and maybe an end, right now, seems more rewarding than uncertainties lying ahead.
I can’t tell you what to do with your life, but I can tell you that your touch on this world hasn’t gone unnoticed. You’ve changed the lives of people around you. You’re still doing it right now — the tendrils of your potentialities are reaching out and influencing the possibilities of others.
No, I can’t tell you what to do, but I can tell you that if your main reason to give up on life is because you think you don’t matter — maybe you should take a moment to think again. To look at this universe you live in with a new light, to look at yourself as an influencer and not something that’s stagnant.
Because you are many things, Anonymous, and you can be so many things more, great and small — but stagnant and matterless are two things that are definitely not among them.
I want to prove to a friend that he will be dearly missed.
